Steve, Helena, Robert – Day Skippers – June 2010

Hi Mark, Jane & Alice,

Just a quick email to thank you all for a wonderful week of sailing tuition, I really enjoyed learning the ropes (hee hee) & the feeling of freedom sailing gave me, I see why you have chosen this a lifestyle. Although I have a certification as Day Skipper, I am not foolish enough to think I know it all, far from it, my next step is to seek sailing opportunities as a crew member on a boat going somewhere hot (I don’t do cold unless I have a snowboard on my feet).
Anyhow, I hope you are all well & happy.
Rob

Stuart Murdoch – Day Skipper – August 2009

Hiya Mark and Jane,
Hope all is well with you both and you’re making the most of this blustery weather….its not for the faint hearted out there at the moment.
Sorry for the belated reply, things have been hectic here and I’ve been meaning to write in for a while now but work keeps getting in the way.
I would like to thank you both for a fantastic course in Portugal, not only did I learn lots but I have now gained a fantastic qualification that will change all my holidays from now on. I found the course Interesting, challenging but most of all a great deal of fun…..apart from the early starts every day :-)
I would highly recommend anyone who is looking to start this as a new sport to use Learn to Sail and I would be happy to act as a reference for the company.
I will hopefully be looking to clock some miles up next year so please keep me posted on any journeys that I can jump aboard on.
Look forward to seeing you both in the near future.

Stu

Luke Suter – Day Skipper – May & October 2009

Dear Mark and Jane,
The three of us had a great time completing our day skipper and competent crew onboard OSPREY in sunny Portugal.
Getting to Faro, even from Switzerland, was hassle-free and we will definitely come back for future training.
Thank you very much for your hospitality, patience and most of all expertise!

Hi Mark and Jane
Thank you for an excellent Theory and Practical Course which I received on Osprey in Portugal. The training from Mark was just what I was looking for – down to earth, practical and fun giving me the confidence to take a large yacht onto the water.
Albufeira Marina and the other ports we visited in Portugal were all excellent locations – where else in March can you reliably find sunshine!
All the arrangements went exactly to plan too. I certainly felt well looked after.
I would be happy to recommend the course to others.
Regards, John

Portugal seems a distant memory ( see below) !!!

Thanks for the course. It was a really good experience and excellent sailing / crewing instruction. When I get my land legs ( still the occasional wobble) I will think about next steps !!

David, Sally, Laura & Gary – May 2010 Algarve Training

Early May in Portugal saw some lovely sunny weather and near perfect sailing breezes for David, Sally Laura and Gary’s sail training courses on Osprey our Beneteau 411 Oceanis.

This time the winds favoured a sail down to the Faro River delta and a great time was had sailing the Faro and Olhao rivers. Flat water and a force 4 – 5 SW’ly saw us screaming along up the bouyed channel and then it was time to down sails and to tie up for the night in Olhao. Ashore to then sample the local delicacies in the river front restaurants.

Next day it was off to play in Vilamoura where the boats are on average about 3 million pounds. Plenty of mooring practice there and then it was time for an early night as we had planned our night sail for 0400.
The crew duely surfaced at the 0400 to clear skies, gentle breeze and sparkling shore lights. No moon made for careful progress as we edged out of the marina dodging lobster pots etc. Lighthouses shone their lights and fishing boats bobbed about as we found our way and explored the delights of night sailing.
Then as the dawn lit up the eastern sky it was time to head back to Vilamoura for that well earned “Full English” breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice (for the health concious).

Last day saw everyone having a go at the “Tacking & Gybing” game, poor Bob was given a good run for his money. Then it was time to “Scrub the decks” and make sure she was all clean and tidy for the next crew.

Well done to Laura for gaining her Day Skipper certificate and to Gary for getting his Competent Crew ticket too – look forward to seeing you all back to do more in the future.
